Hello! I’m Courtlyn Shimada, a therapist in New York City with a passion for understanding you and how you thrive. I work with adults of all ages who may be navigating through feelings of depression, anxiety, or grief, and struggles with chronic illness or significant life changes. Through the highs, lows, and plateaus, I am committed to creating a warm and empowering space where together we can explore any obstacles that life may present.
Specialties and Who I Work With
In our sessions, therapy is a collaborative process where you are the expert on your own experiences, and I’m here to offer structured support and guidance as you:
- Experience life transitions, such as career changes, moving, grief, and aging
- Manage life with chronic illness or difficult diagnoses
- Balance wellness and high stress work environments
- Navigate complex relationships and communication patterns
- Understand identity, family dynamics, and intergenerational stress
- Cope with depression, anxiety, shame, and self-criticism
Identity and Change
I work with clients to offer a holistic approach, considering not only individual dynamics but also the impact of the broader environment and societal systems. Together, we’ll work to uplift your personal strengths, while grounding in concrete coping skills to use through periods of change.
Stress and Uncertainty
Navigating through life’s uncertainties often leads clients to seek support in managing feelings of overwhelming stress and anxiety. In sessions, we may work to identify sources of stress, as well as sources of strength to help you feel more secure and confident in your daily life.
Strengthening Relationships
Our relationships – with family, with friends, with coworkers – play a large role in our lives. I help clients navigate both new and chronic challenges within these dynamics. We’ll explore communication tools and emotional regulation techniques to reinforce strong frameworks for healthy relationships.
Therapy Approach
I approach therapy through a relational and holistic lens. In our sessions, therapy is a collaborative process where you are the expert on your own experiences, and I’m here to offer structured support and guidance. Depending on where our journey takes us, we may tap into practices such as mindfulness, meditation, art, and writing as ways to deepen the work we do together.
